Nolan's First (and only) Swim Lesson

Nolan's first swim lesson at the gym was last weekend, and sadly, it will be his only one until he gets older :(  Not because he was afraid, but because of the double ear infection he got after only one class!  I asked his ENT doctor about his swim lessons before he even signed up, and supposedly, he was supposed to be fine.  Well, after one lesson we ended up with an infected ear drum and draining from the other ear, so we are calling it quits for now until he gets a bit older.

I am so bummed for him, since he loved it and it was something fun to do as a family on the weekends.  But, I hope his ears will get better and we will try again next year when he is more likely to be able to swim anyway.

He still looked SUPER cute :)  I was awesome and forgot the camera, so had to suffice with my cell phone...

First time with flip flops in between his toes, and not sure what to make of it!

Introducing each other at the beginning of class...

Nolan was supposed to be "paddling," but I think he was eating the noodle instead :)

Even though he only got to go once, I am so happy we took him.  He wasn't afraid of the water at all, and had a blast!  We got a few good videos of him paddling his legs and arms, and he even went all the way under once (not sure if it was planned, but nevermind).  If he is anything like his Daddy (and me) he will be a complete water baby and take to it in no time!

The "look" (a/k/a Grumpy Cat)

Caught this picture of him while watching the Super Bowl...you can tell he was "not amused."  Too funny!  My own little grumpy cat...

Valentine's Day 2015

Having a kid has totally allowed the make-a-craft-or-gift-for-any-reason really come out of me, and I love it!  I know Nolan has no clue what is going on (or would he really care), but I love love love making gifts and little crafts!  I don't really have time to do any intricate crafts lately, but just a few small things here and there are still fun and festive.

Nolan had a fun Valentine's basket this year complete with some new clothes, bubbles, coloring books, a ball (of course) and some new plates.  He loves bubbles, so those were a hit (being that they were leftover from his school treats - score!)

You can't see his outfit all that well (and you can tell he was super happy to be taking pictures that morning), but he was dressed up that day (for daycare, anyway) and wore some socks that said, "Hello ladies."  Too cute.

For his teachers, I just did some good-smelling Bath and Body Works soaps, and then his classmates got a bottle of bubbles which said, "You blow me away, Valentine!"  I am wary to give kids any food-related items, just because you never know these days which kid has what allergy.  I thought they were pretty cute, and even better, they were cheap and we had three bottles leftover for Nolan!

I decided to start the festivities early this week, and made lip-shaped red velvet brownies for Ollie and G.  I couldn't find a heart-shaped cookie cutter on my shopping trip, so I decided lips were fun too :)

Thanks to Pinterest, I made heart-shaped cinnamon rolls and strawberry "pop tarts" which were amazing!  I may or may not have eaten 5 of them in one day...oops.

On actual Valentine's day we enjoyed a super delicious breakfast at Jones's CafĂ© in Clayton, and then ventured downtown to the Raleigh Home and Garden show just for something to do.  Nolan had a good time seeing all of the exhibits, and especially loved the swing set booth!  They can do some pretty amazing stuff with swing sets nowadays, so I can't wait until Nolan gets his first one!

By the time we made it home, we were pooped and didn't feel like cooking the meal we had planned, so we just ordered a pizza for dinner and hung out on the couch :)  Our Sunday night dinner was way more special, as Anthony re-created the very first Valentine's dinner he ever made for me - TEN Valentine's days ago!  We had bacon-wrapped Cornish game hens (he will wrap Anything in bacon), asparagus, and new potatoes.  It was SO good, and I can't believe we have had 10 of these together and I still remember that sweet meal he cooked for me 10 years ago in our little one-bedroom apartment in Atlanta!

So many sweet memories, and now I have TWO sweethearts to love on!

16 Months!

We have a true toddler on our hands in every sense of the word now!  From wobbling/running all over the place, to strategic "meltdowns" to teething, we are in it :)

This little monkey is so full of energy, and I would dare to say only stops moving when he is asleep.  For the most part, he is happy and always snuggly, but we are starting to see some of those little episodes of crazy at the same time!  Usually, though, they don't last long and as soon as you pick him up or give him what he wants, he stops.

This month has been pretty uneventful for the most part, and that's a good thing!  We celebrated MLK day (by me working my butt off at home while he was at daycare), and celebrated Papa's birthday on the 30th.  He also had his ear tube surgery follow-up, and that went perfect.  He is cleared to get in the pool (great since he starts swim lessons on the 21st!) and everything else looked good too.

Seems like "selfies" are the only way I can get him to sit still...now if he could smile!

Here is what little man has been up to this past month:

Eating: This is an interesting category, for sure.  Nolan has gone through many "stages" this month when it comes to food/eating.  At the beginning, he couldn't get enough of oranges and "booberries" as he calls them (otherwise known as blueberries).  Now, he isn't that in to them at all!  He also went through a major growth spurt around the later part of January, and I could.not.feed.him.enough!  He would devour everything and was waking up in the middle of the night starving too.  Now, it's a fight to get him to eat anything (even though they say he does great during the day at school).  We continue to try new approaches to get him to make it through dinner without a meltdown, but we haven't found the magic solution just yet.  He still seems to "like" everything he eats, he just doesn't want to EAT it.  I also bought him some little utensils, and he likes to try and feed himself with those - he can do quite well at it most of the time if you put the food on the spoon for him!

Sleep: We just don't have a sleeper and there is no other way to put it.  I would say right now we average 3 "all-nighters" to 4 nights where he wakes up at least once.  Thankfully, Anthony is a night owl and usually will get him and get him back to sleep.  When all else fails, he wakes me up :)  He goes down really easily, and I am still nursing him just at night.  He is usually in bed asleep by 8:30, and will sleep until 6:15 or so on a good night.  He still gets his breathing treatment at night and first thing in the morning.

Bumps: Little man sure can seek out a bump or a bruise like none other!  I love that he is such a typical boy, and being a boy momma requires a strong stomach and quick thinking, that's for sure!  He has gotten more bruises on his little noggin' than I can count, and busted his lip pretty good a few weeks ago too.  The bruises I can handle, but the busted lips just break my heart!  You never want to see your little one bleeding, but I suppose this is just preparing me for those "daring" teenage years!  One particularly memorable moment happened at daycare: Nolan decided to climb up on the table, and being walking towards the edge like he was going to walk straight off the end!  His awesome teacher literally DOVE across the room/table and snagged the back of his shirt just as he was walking off the edge.  Thankfully, she caught him, but has been out of work (and will be out for the next week) because she sprained her back!  Oh my gosh I felt so terrible, so Nolan and I drew her a picture and plan to have flowers for her when she finally comes back to work...my little daredevil for sure!

Mommy's helper:  It still amazes me how much he comprehends and learns just by watching me/us.  The other day, I was picking him room up before we left for the day, and he went and picked the pillow up that goes on his rocker and put it back on the rocker (I move it at night to another place when I sit to put him to sleep, and then put it back in the morning)!  I just sat there amazed, and never had to tell him to do it!  He also likes to put his dirty clothes in the hamper and put clothes into the dryer.  Mom said the other day he also picked up the broom after he watched her sweep, and wanted to help!  Wonder how I can get that to continue ... :)

Daycare:  I may have mentioned it before, but Nolan moved up to the next class at daycare on January 26th.  I was at first hesitant for him to move because I loved his old teachers, but have found his new teachers to be just as wonderful!

Vocab:  Nolan is learning a few new words here and there, but they aren't pronounced exactly correct just yet!  He will use his version of "car," "sock," and "coat/jacket" pretty regularly now.  He loves to try to put his shoes and jacket on now.

Funnies:  For some reason, he loves to stand on his head when he is tired.  You know, the rear in the air head on the ground type thing.  He will just fall flat and stick his butt up if he is tired, and that's the only time he ever does it!  He has also taken to hiding in our closet in all of the clothes.  He loves to run in there and collapse into Anthony's shirts and try to "hide."  Glad Anthony's clothes are on the bottom rack :)  And this is something HE thinks is funny, but me/us not so much: when he knows he has either picked up something he shouldn't or we are asking him to give us something, he will RUN away and then THROW it as soon as we catch up to him!  We are testing our "boundaries" for sure right now, and sometimes it's hard not to laugh when we are trying to discipline him at the same time!  Little stinker :)
